MILTON 鈥 The School District of Milton saw a slight drop in its overall number of students, total adjusted headcount and full-time equivalent ratio as the 2025-26 school year got underway, per its third Friday report to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.
The school board will be briefed on the report when it meets this Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the district office, 448 E. High St.
Districts across the state are required to annually report student counts to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction by the third Friday of September, which was Sept. 19 this year. The report is a piece of how funding from the state is determined.
The district鈥檚 total adjusted headcount was 3,364, down from 3,389 from 2024-25. Total adjusted headcount is the count of full-time resident students, no matter where they attend. Total full-time equivalency, or FTE, was 3,287, down from 3,311. FTE is used to come up with the total adjusted headcount.
Total adjusted headcount is looked at more than enrollment because not all students attend full-time, such as a kindergarten student attending school for a half-day who is counted as 0.5 FTE.
The total students in all buildings was 3,426, down from 3,456.
The total number of students in 4-year-old kindergarten and kindergarten through third-grade was 1,007. The total adjusted headcount was 904. There were 173 students in those grades who had open-enrolled into the district and 111 students in those grades who had open-enrolled out of the district.
In grades 4-6, who attend Northside Intermediate, there was a total adjusted headcount of 677. The total number of overall students was 769.
At the middle school, which enrolls grades 7 and 8, there were 528 students total. The total adjusted headcount was 475.
At the high school, the total number of students was 1,052. The total adjusted headcount was 926.
According to a report included in materials for Monday鈥檚 board meeting, enrollment has remained 鈥渧ery steady over time鈥 with an overall increase of just under 2% since 2011.
In 2011, K-12 overall enrollment was 3,178. It increased in 2012 by 39, to 3,217. It saw two years of decreases after that to 3,197 and 3,195 but then three consecutive years of increases. Enrollment was 3,195 in 2014, 3,246 in 2015 and 2,262 in 2016.
